Complete Communities Program Expanded! 


Mayor Sylvester Turner announced the addition of five new neighborhoods to the Complete Communities program on June 20, 2019!  The new neighborhoods are  Alief, Kashmere Gardens, Fort Bend Houston, Magnolia Park - Manchester, and Sunnyside. The announcement was made at a community celebration at Eastwood Park in Second Ward to showcase examples of the program's progress. Walkable Places Milestone Achieved


On June 11, the Walkable Places Committee unanimously approved the proposed Walkable Places Ordinance Framework and the Transit Corridor Ordinance amendments. This was a culmination of two and a half years of work by the Committee that included several meetings and public outreach in the three pilot communities to get feedback from residents and stakeholders on the proposals.  We believe these two regulatory tools will guide developers to create development that is more vibrant and walkable for the public and promotes a safe and comfortable experience for all modes of transportation.

In the coming months, the Planning & Development Department will finalize a public outreach plan for the proposed regulatory tools to collect public input. A public hearing for both items will be held in the fall.  Thank you to the various organizations, stakeholders and individuals who have diligently worked in advancing this initiative.  Click here for more details. 
Program Updates
              
Bicycle Advisory Committee:  The Bicycle Advisory Committee will meet on July 24, from 2:30-4:30 pm, at the City Hall Annex Council Chambers at 900 Bagby. Details here. 

Historic Preservation: A summer "camp" was held by the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions on June 22. The commission assistance and mentoring program, or CAMP, is a significant investment in education and best practices regarding Houston's historic preservation. The training camp included Historic Commissioners, Preservation Appeals Board members, and the Planning Department's Historic Preservation Team.

Vision Zero: The Department's Transportation Planning Team is working with city departments and partners to establish a Vision Zero plan for Houston. Mayor Turner made the announcement on June 10 that the city is joining the national Vision Zero network which is a street safety strategy designed to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030.
